Tasks

Step-by-step for the things you do often once Offloft is running, from excluding files to moving your settings to another site.

In this section

01Connect a providerChoose your storage provider, create a bucket and access key, then connect it to Offloft by following its step-by-step guide.

To connect a provider, open Offloft → Settings → Connection, or the setup wizard on a new site, choose your provider, and paste your access keys and bucket name. Each provider has a step-by-step guide, inside the plugin and on this site, with values to copy and paste.

02Run the connection test and the delivery checkWhat the connection test and the delivery check each look at, and what to do when one of them fails on your site.
  1. Credentials. Your provider accepts the keys.
  2. Bucket. The bucket exists and these keys can reach it.
  3. Upload. A small test file can be written.
  4. Read back. The file comes back the same.
  5. Delete. The test file can be removed.

03Use a custom domain or CDN for your mediaPoint an address you own at your bucket, then tell Offloft to use it, so your media loads from your own domain.
  1. In your provider's dashboard, connect the domain to your bucket. With Cloudflare R2 on the same Cloudflare account, use the bucket's custom domain setting. Elsewhere, add the CNAME record your provider shows at your DNS host.
  2. Wait for the domain to answer over https://. This can take a few minutes after a DNS change.
  3. In Offloft, open Settings → Delivery, enter the domain and run the delivery test.

04Exclude files from offloadKeep single media items on your server, or skip whole file types, so Offloft leaves those files out of the cloud.
  1. Open Offloft → Files.
  2. Select the items.
  3. Choose Exclude from the bulk actions.

05Bring everything back to your serverDownload every file again, check each one, and return your site to its local files.
  1. If you used Replace URLs in database, click Undo from backup in Tools first, so your posts point at your server again.
  2. Open Jobs and choose Bring everything back to my server.
  3. Leave Also delete from … afterwards off unless you're sure.
  4. Click Start bringing back. It runs in the background, so you can close the page.

06Replace URLs in old contentA rarely needed tool that rewrites saved media addresses, with a preview, a backup and undo.
  1. Open Offloft → Tools and find Replace URLs in database.
  2. Click Run a dry run. It's read-only, and shows how many addresses it found in posts, custom fields and site settings.
  3. Confirm you have a recent database backup. Offloft also saves the changed rows so you can undo.
  4. Click Replace URLs. It runs as a job that you can pause.

07Export and import settingsCopy Offloft's settings between sites, with or without your access keys.

To copy settings to another site, open Offloft → Tools → Export or import settings and click Export. Access keys are left out unless you choose to include them. On the other site, choose the file and click Import. Offloft shows what will change first, and you can undo the import.

08Turn off "delete from bucket when deleted in WordPress"Keep files in your bucket when a media item is deleted in WordPress, and what that means for your storage bill.

By default, deleting a media item in WordPress also removes its files from your bucket, which keeps the bucket tidy. To keep them, open Offloft → Settings → Uploads & sync and turn off Delete from the cloud when deleted in the Media Library. The setting saves automatically.
