Concepts

How Offloft moves, checks and serves your files, and why it works the way it does.

In this section

01How verification works, in shortThe short version of what Offloft checks in your bucket before your site uses a file.
  1. Uploaded. The file was sent.
  2. Checked. Offloft looks at the copy in the bucket and compares it with the file on your server.
  3. Verified. The check passed. Your site may now serve the cloud copy.

02File statesWhat each status on a file means, and which copy your site serves in that state.

Every file Offloft tracks has one status: the original, the scaled copy, each thumbnail and each extra format. Your site serves the cloud copy only when a file is verified. In every other normal state it serves the file on your server. You'll see these under Files and in the Media Library.

03Issues and fixesHow Offloft reports problems, what the fix buttons do, and when to ignore an issue.

An issue means a file isn't where it should be, or a check failed. Your site keeps working, because a file that isn't verified loads from your server. Open Offloft → Issues to see each problem in plain words, with a fix button where one is possible and the reason it happened.

04JobsOffload, verify, re-sync and bring everything back, in the background with pause and cancel.

A job is a piece of library-wide work that runs in the background: offloading everything, verifying everything, re-syncing, or bringing everything back to your server. You can close the page while it runs. Pause it, resume it where it stopped, or cancel it. What's already done stays done.

05How URLs are servedOffloft changes media addresses as pages are shown, so normal offloading doesn't change your database.

Offloft changes media addresses as each page is shown, so normal offloading doesn't change your database. Your posts keep their original local addresses. A verified file gets the cloud address, and anything else keeps the local one. Turning rewriting off returns your site to its local files at once.
